Scientific research is the basis of the institution and, since its foundation in 1901, it has worked with a plethora of fields, from cultural and scientific dissemination to the development and production of immunobiologicals supplied to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Located in a park, the Institute houses laboratories specialized in basic and applied studies in several areas of public health, such as: Immunology, Toxinology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, Animal Biology, Genetics, and Physiology.

Butantan invests in scientific dissemination and training of professionals through graduate programs in Toxinology and specialization in Health Science, professional MBA in Innovation in Health, scientific initiation and university extension courses (the School of Higher Education of Instituto Butantan - ESIB).

Research funding comes from agencies such as CNPq, Fapesp, Capes and Finep, through grants and large institutional projects, such as the Center of Excellence in New Target Discovery (CENTD) and the Center of Toxins, Immune Response and Cell Signaling (CeTICS).

The main groups in the scientific division are the Center for Scientific Development (CDC), the Center for Industrial Development and Innovation (CDI) and the Bioindustrial Center (CB).
