Esper Georges Kallás

Director of Instituto Butantan

Graduated from the Itajubá Medical School in 1989, Esper Georges Kallás completed his medical residency in Infectious Diseases at the São Paulo Municipal Civil Servant Hospital and a master's degree at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp). Defended in 1996, his dissertation analyzed the risk factors for HIV infection in the São Paulo House of Detention. In 1999, he completed his doctorate at Unifesp, with co- tutorship at the University of Rochester, in the United States, researching the antigen- specific production of cytokines by T lymphocytes after infection and vaccination. Full Professor at the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP), where he has been a faculty member since 2009. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he worked on the front lines of clinical care and as a member of the São Paulo State Contingency Center, an organization that monitored and coordinated actions against the spread of SARS-CoV-2. He was the principal investigator of several clinical trials, such as for the dengue vaccine and CoronaVac phase 3. Among his research areas are treatment of HIV infection, vaccines, the effects of the cell cycle on the genetic variation of HIV-1, immunology of infectious diseases, host-parasite relationship and clinical immunology.

Rui Curi

Rui Curi

Vice-director of Instituto Butantan

Graduated in Pharmacy-Biochemistry from the State University of Maringá (1980), holds a Master’s (1982) and a Doctorate (1984) from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo, where he worked as a Full Professor until 2016. Best known for his pioneering work on leukocyte metabolism and the control of immune function and inflammatory response (immunometabolism). Visiting Researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford, England; the School of Medicine at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium; the School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he was awarded by the Simon Guggenheim Foundation and Scopus/CAPES for his scientific achievements, recognized as a Distinguished Fellow at Curtin University, in Perth, Australia, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the State University of Maringá.

Director of the Center for Scientific Development of Butantan

Graduated in Biomedicine from the University of Santo Amaro (1996), Master’s (2000) and Doctorate (2004) in Pharmacology from the University of São Paulo and Post- doctorate fellowship from the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of São Paulo (2011). She is a Research Productivity Fellow - Level 2 from CNPq and accredited professor in the graduate program of Pharmacology, by the Department of Pharmacology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at USP, Graduate Program in Sciences - Toxinology at Instituto Butantan and the Professional Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Bioprocesses at Instituto Butantan. She is a member of the Board of Instituto Butantan and of the Board of Trustees of Fundação Butantan. She is the Coordinator of the Crotoxin, Matrix and Immunometabolism Research Group which investigates the action of Crotoxin (CTX), the main toxin isolated from the venom of Crotalus durissus terrificus (rattlesnake), on the immunometabolism, particularly on the function and energy metabolism of macrophages and how this CTX’s immunomodulatory action may control inflammatory events associated with tumor progression. She also investigates the direct effect of this toxin on tumor cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts in 3D extracellular matrix, in an in vitro biomimetic system to the tumor microenvironment and the main intracellular signaling pathways involved. She develops spheroid platforms in an in vitro 3D system to investigate heterotypic interactions. As an advisor, she received the 8th Highlight of the Year Award (2010) in Undergraduate Research, granted by CNPq, for 2nd place in the area of ​​Life Sciences. Evaluator of the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes) – BASis – National Institute of Educational Studies and Research “Anísio Teixeira” (INEP), linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), since 2007. She was Vice- Coordinator of the School of Higher Education of Instituto Butantan - ESIB from 2019 to 2022, Coordinator of the Internship Committee - IBu since 2015, Director of the Center for Scientific Development, Provost of Graduate Studies at IBu since 2018, member of the Coordination of Strategic Diagnostic Laboratory - COVID-19 since March/2020, member of the Genomic Surveillance Network for COVID-19 since March 2021, and Project Coordinator of CeVIVAS FAPESP/Fundação Butantan since 2022.

Ana Marisa Chudzinski-Tavassi

Director of the Development and Innovation Center of Butantan

Pharmaceutical-biochemist graduated from the Federal University of Paraná, with a master’s and doctorate from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), a doctorate from the Pasteur Institute in Paris and a postdoc from the National Academy of Medicine in Buenos Aires, she is a 1C researcher at CNPq and accredited professor in the graduate programs of Molecular Biology at Unifesp, Interunits in Biotechnology at the University of São Paulo (USP) and Toxinology at Instituto Butantan. She is a member of the Board of Instituto Butantan, the Board of Trustees of Fundação Butantan, the City Council of Science, Technology and Innovation of São Paulo and the Brazilian Pharmaceutical Innovation Network. With 140 articles published in indexed journals, 25 patents filed in Brazil and/or abroad, 12 book chapters, 26 supervisions of master’s dissertations, 26 supervisions of doctoral theses, and 27 supervisions of post- doctorates. She conceived and was general coordinator of the MBA course in Health Innovation Management at Instituto Butantan, which trained more than 200 people from all over the country during its five years of activity. Ana Marisa has led partnership projects with national and international pharmaceutical companies and technology companies, and has created and directs the Centre of Excellence in New Target Discovery (CENTD), a public-private partnership supported by FAPESP, GlaxoSmithKline and Butantan. Among her most recent awards are the VII Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award from the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo-ICESP (2016).

Giuseppe Puorto

Giuseppe Puorto

Director of the Cultural Development Center of Butantan

Biologist graduated from the University of Mogi das Cruzes in 1978, he is a level VI scientific researcher at Instituto Butantan. Herpetologist specializing in snakes, he works in the areas of systematics, geographic distribution, biology and anatomy of neotropical snakes, environmental education and scientific dissemination with venomous animals and herpetology. Over 90 publications, including scientific articles, scientific notes, case reports, books, book chapters, CD-ROMs, bulletins and technical manuals. In addition to director of the Butantan Cultural Development Center, he is the director of the Biological and History Museums and coordinator of Animal Reception. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Fundação Butantan, of the Board of Instituto Butantan, of the Regional Council of Biology (CRBio-01) and of the Advisory Council of the São Paulo Zoo Foundation, part of the State Department of Infrastructure and Environment. He works in the technical staff of Hospital Vital Brazil in the identification of snakes and other venomous reptiles, and is a consultant to the Ministry of Health in the area of ​​snakes and ophidism. Coordinates and teaches the extension courses “Snakes”, “Poisonous animals”, “Animals on display: challenges and educational potential” and “Nature and scientific photography”; and the dissemination courses “Snakes of importance in health” and “Snake identification”, promoted by Butantan. He is curator of the Butantan Science Park; the permanent exhibition at the Biological Museum; the long-term temporary exhibition “Serun ou Soro” at the Terra Firme Exhibition Space; and the Zoology – Herpetology section of the Amazon Science Museum (MuCA), under implementation in the city of Belterra (PA). He also coordinates the project “Survey of herpetofauna and scientific dissemination at Legado das Águas – Reservas Votorantim” in Tapiraí (SP).

Ricardo Neves Oliveira

Ricardo Neves Oliveira

Director of the Bioindustrial Center of Butantan

Graduated in Biological Sciences from Universidade São Judas Tadeu, he attended a specialization in Innovation Management in Health at Instituto Butantan and a specialization in Production Engineering at Universidade São Judas Tadeu. Admitted in April 2004 as Lab. Auxiliary for the production of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, he was a Support Agent for Scientific and Technological Research, Production Coordinator, and Production Manager of the Influenza Vaccine Factory. Since October 2019, he has been the Production Director of the BioIndustrial Center of Instituto Butantan, being responsible for five production centers and around 1,100 employees. Participated in the production of the HBsAg antigen of the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, the implementation of the Pilot Influenza Laboratory, the production of Influenza Banks, and the technology transfer for the production of fragmented and inactivated influenza vaccine, as well as the beginning of the Influenza Factory. He has been active in the development of a whole virus influenza vaccine and pandemic vaccines for H5N1, H1N1 and H7N9 strains. Under his management, the trivalent influenza vaccine production line was pre-qualified by the WHO, allowing its exportation to the United Nations and associated agencies. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he was one of the leaders responsible for the production and delivery of 120 million doses of the CoronaVac vaccine to the Brazilian Ministry of Health and one of the technical leaders in the development of the ButanVac vaccine and the quadrivalent influenza vaccine. He is directly involved in projects for new factories, such as the Multipurpose Vaccine Production Site and the Monoclonal Antibodies production plant. He is a member of the Board of Instituto Butantan and the Board of Trustees of Fundação Butantan.
